There are strict rules regarding availability - be willing to volunteer for a minimum of 10 days at either the Olympic Games or the Paralympic Games (or for a minimum of 20 days if you want to volunteer at both), able to attend a 30 minute face-to-face interview, able to attend at least three training sessions -  and you must be eligible to volunteer in the UK in accordance with immigration rules.

 

You must undergo – and pass – the required screening, security vetting, right to volunteer and background checks. You must be able to speak and read English.

Inspired by British cycling winners?

After the success of the British cyclists in the Olympic Games, has it encouraged you to start bike riding? The Independent has provided a useful list of The 50 Best Bicycles Sustrans (co-ordinators of over 12,000 miles of national cycle routes around the UK) is offering you a free information pack to help you get out and about by bike. I would feel inspired to get my bike out more - if it would just stop raining so much! This summer has been nearly as bad as last summer, weather-wise. And this news is hardly encouraging: Britain is set for its wettest August for nearly 100 years (link via telegraph.co.uk)

This funny article, Just why is beach volleyball in the Olympics? raises some valid questions about whether some of the sports, such as beach volleyball, in the Olympic Games really are sports. What do you guys think?

The Olympics are more important than Russia invading Georgia - according to the BBC

Russia goes to war. Important? Not if you ask the BBC Russia has attacked Georgia. They are fighting RIGHT NOW. It’s David vs Goliath, and Georgia has requested for US help in defending itself. Should the US accept, we’ll have the US (which may eventually mean UK too) vs Russia. Two of the world’s biggest superpowers. But hold on, this isn’t big news. Oh no. It’s very insignificant — according to the BBC. There’s an Olympic ceremony going on, didn’t you know, and having spent millions of licence-fee payers’ cash, they seem reluctant to drop the Olympics as their lead story online. (link via Dave Lee J Blog) It's true - I just had a look at the BBC website and their lead story is still "Spectacular ceremony opens Beijing Olympics" splashed across the top of the page. (This is at 5:15 pm - British time - when the Olympic opening ceremony finished) You have to scroll down for other news stories, including the one titled, Russian tanks enter South Ossetia.

Shouldn't Team GB be Team UK?

Okay. Maybe someone can answer this puzzling question: Why is the British team in the Olympics called Team GB and not Team UK? Team GB is the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team and since the United Kingdom consists of Great Britain* and Northern Ireland, why is it not called Team UK? Doesn't Team GB imply that Northern Ireland is not included? Does the name bother you at all or am I missing something? *Great Britain consists of England, Wales and Scotland.
