The movie, The Happening; is it really that bad?

I have been reading lots of comments and (bad) reviews in the blogosphere about the movie, The Happening, the new movie from the director M. Night Shyamalan. In fact, I haven't read any good reviews so I'm pretty certain I will give it a miss, especially after reading The Movie Review: 'The Happening' by Christopher Orr Mr. Orr doesn't just review the movie. He warns that: This film is so bad that I feel compelled to make a spoiler-laden list of its most laughably terrible parts rather than review it. Normally, I wouldn't read any review that provides spoilers but since I had already decided I would probably not be going to see it, I read his review. I actually laughed out loud at the descriptions he provided and now I know I will not go and see it. If you have already seen the movie, it would be interesting to get your opinions. Is it really that bad and that ridiculous? (link via tnr.com via kottke.org)

  1. You know, I'm not sure. His last film, Lady in the Water, was a lot better (in my humble opinion) than the critics cave him credit for. I thought plenty of those reviews were completely unfair. Then, in said film, he did (in rather humorous fashion) kill off the most unlikeable character in the picture, a film critic, which probably didn't endear him to that profession. I was expecting lousy reviews for his next film and here they are. I could be wrong, though. It may just be an awful film. I'll probably rent it....

  2. I never saw Lady in the Water but I did see The Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village. I liked those movies but this latest one (The Happening) just sounds very silly to me. I might watch it sometime when it shows up on TV - out of curiousity more than anything else. It's not a movie I would pay to see though.

I just had another thought - it's possible that all these bad reviews in the blogosphere will actually encourage a lot more people to go see The Happening!
