70 years ago today rationing was intoduced in Britain Read more about it from this post, "Rationing Begins" on The Ministry of Food blog. Watch the (fascinating!) film which the Ministry of Information made in 1944 to explain the rationing system and its effect on the people of England to American audiences:

  3. Fascinating! Whilst people accepted it during the war they were less happy during the period afterwards when it continued, and for some things got even worse! Flighty xx

  4. Yes, I can understand how people would be more willing to accept rationing during the war years but not so much after the war ended. It must have been very difficult for everyone.

  5. This video was a walk back in time!

Relatives in Britain, who lived through the war, sometimes spoke about rationing. They generally felt that rationing didn't hurt them but there was a certain resentment toward richer relatives who could afford to buy food on the black market. Family members visiting Britain from America in the years immediately following the war were also issued ration booklets.

  6. Interesting that visitors were issued ration books too - but it makes sense.
