New "Red Dwarf" - hit or miss?

So after 10 years, the cult comedy "Red Dwarf" is returning to TV for three new episodes. Did you watch part one last night? As a huge fan of the original series, I have to say that I was disappointed. I didn't think it was very funny - in fact, I think I only laughed twice. I was impressed though that all four actors - Craig Charles (Lister), Chris Barrie (Rimmer), Danny John-Jules (Cat), and Robert Llewellyn (Kryten) - from the original series returned for the special. My husband and sons are also huge fans of the show and they thought the special last night was okay. They admitted it was a bit slow but they figure it's the first episode out of three and needed to set up the story. I'm not so willing to excuse its shortcomings. What did you think? Red Dwarf - Back To Earth Episode Guide: The official synopses for the three-part special. Red Dwarf on Dave

  1. I was never a great fan although I did watch it now and again, but we have it recorded, so I shall watch the new one as soon as I have time.

  2. It will be interesting to find out what you think of it, Jenny. I'm just not enjoying this new trilogy - but maybe it's just me.

We watched part two last night, and again, I just didn't enjoy it. Yes, there were a few laughs but I was underwhelmed by the storyline which I didn't think was clever at all.

  3. Like Jenny I was never a fan. I'm rather glad I'm not as I don't have 'Dave'.
I'm not sure that reviving shows like this, especially after a long absence, is a good idea, but at least the original actors are all back for it. xx

  4. Flighty, if you were never a fan of "Red Dwarf", then believe me, you didn't miss anything with this special.

And I agree, I don't think it is a good idea to wait so long before reviving a TV show like this. It's a shame they didn't make a movie version shortly after the series finished. I'm sure with the big fanbase, it would have been a big hit. Oh well. As you say, at least the original actors are in this special.

We don't subscribe to cable or satellite TV but we do get Freeview which is how we can watch the Dave channel. It's a shame if Freeview isn't available in your area, because you miss out on a lot of extra channels such as BBC3 and BBC4, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4, E4, More4, Film4, as well as Dave.
