Mamma Mia! movie review
I finally saw the movie, Mamma Mia! today! My husband and I were surprised to see the cinema was nearly full when we took our seats - usually after a movie has been out for a while, the audience numbers start to dwindle a bit.
I thought Mamma Mia! was fantastic fun! It is simply buzzing with energy and a joy to watch. I noticed there were all ages in the cinema audience and everyone walked out with a big smile on their face.
We both thought all the actors were very good even though they aren't particularly strong singers (Pierce Brosnan tried hard but really can't sing) apart from the one who played the daughter, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) but we still enjoyed the whole movie. Meryl Streep is very good in her part although her singing voice isn't strong enough for every song. The inconsistency didn't spoil the film though.
The story is very cleverly based on the ABBA songs and the movie was filmed on several Greek islands. The scenery certainly adds a pleasant element to the movie. The movie is probably more of a woman's film (an ideal one for girlfriends to go see together) but saying that, my husband hates musicals but he enjoyed Mama Mia. He said he can see that it will probably become a cult hit like Grease. I think he's right - it has the classic ABBA songs, the gorgeous Greek scenery, a good cast of actors, and it's bursting with happy energy.
Be sure and stay for more fun after the credits! There's another scene with the cast and it's hilarious. Don't miss it!
By the way, Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson were executive producers of the movie.
Have you seen Mamma Mia! yet? Did you see the stage production and how does it compare if you have seen both?
Update: Since posting this, I've learned where the movie was filmed: on the Greek islands Skopelos, and Skiathos, and Damouchari in the Pelion region on the Greek mainland was another key location.

this is one of the only plays i've ever seen, it was great
ReplyDeleteI bet it was! It's such a fun story plus it has Abba songs. Have you seen the movie yet?
ReplyDeleteIt was absolutely fantastic! I'm a musical fan anyway so it didn't take much to impress me. You're right about Pierce Brosnan, but I thought he acted well enough; the whole thing is supposed to be a bit of a comedy anyway. Meryl Streep was brilliant overall, in my opinion. The extra scene at the end was fun too!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about Tom Hanks being involved in it though--that was interesting to find out.
Hi Daniel, It's nice to hear from another fan of the movie!
