British MPs vote for 42 day detention: Brown wins

Gordon Brown bought himself time tonight by securing a narrow victory on extending to 42 days the period police can hold terrorist suspects without charge. (link via timesonline.co.uk) You can watch the Commons debate the Counter-Terrorism Bill via the House of Commons video archive. I'm depressed and disgusted. At least it has to go to the House of Lords now so it's not a done deal yet.

  1. Brown wins? Not really. He squeaked past with 9 votes. Sure a wins a win , I guess - but the Lords might yet put another nail in Brown's coffin.

  2. You're right - he just barely won but like you say a wins, a win. I've been reading that the Lords are expected to reject the bill. Let's hope so.
